How to Find the Right Keywords for Your Resume (Free Method)

Keyword optimization is not stuffing. Here is the 15-minute method to find the exact terms that match your target role.

April 28, 2026

The 15-minute method

  1. Pick 10 JDs for your target role.
  2. Paste them all into one doc.
  3. Use a free word-frequency tool (or paste into Resume.co.in's JD analyzer) to find the most-used nouns and verbs.
  4. The top 20 unique terms = your keyword shortlist.
  5. Use 12-15 of them across your summary, skills, and experience.

What to look for

  • Hard skills (e.g., "Kubernetes", "SQL", "Tableau").
  • Methodologies (e.g., "Agile", "OKRs", "RICE").
  • Domain terms (e.g., "BFSI", "EMI", "merchant onboarding").
  • Verbs (e.g., "owned", "scaled", "shipped", "led").

What to avoid

  • White-text keyword stuffing — every modern ATS strips this and may flag you.
  • Listing skills you don't actually have. Failed first-round questions are worse than no callback.
