The principle
Don't hide. Reframe.
The 4 ways to handle a gap
- Short gap (< 6 months): No special treatment needed. Use years-only dates ("2024 — 2025").
- Career break: Add a short, honest entry: "Career break (2024) — caregiving for a family member."
- Upskilling: "Career break (2023-2024) — completed Scaler's System Design course; built 2 production projects." Then list those projects.
- Layoff during a wave: Mention it in a 1-line cover-letter context, not on the resume.
What to add during a gap (so the next gap doesn't hurt)
- A short, dated certification (Coursera, Udemy, Google).
- A volunteer project — even 5 hours/week, listed as a real role.
- A blog with 6-8 dated posts in your field.
The interview question
When asked, give a 30-second answer: "I took 9 months to [reason]. During that time I [concrete activity]. I'm fully ready to ramp now and excited about [this role specifically]."
